The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has extended the deadline to register for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to August 18, 2015, from its original date on May 20, 2015. This applies to citizens of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, or non-citizens who have been habitually living in either of those countries.
USCIS granted TPS status to these countries on November 20, 2014, in wake of the Ebola epidemic that plagued much of western Africa. USCIS grants Temporary Protected Status during health crises and other similar conditions, may also be granted in times of conflict or war, environmental factors, or any other threats on the lives of citizens.
Eligibility Requirements
You may still submit an application if you had previously sent one before the May 20 deadline until August 18. Also, be sure that you have met all eligibility requirements prior to applying. First, you will be required to show that you have been living continuously in the United States since November 20, 2014, and pass a stringent security and background check.
You will need the following items before registering:
- Form I-182: Application for Temporary Protected Status
- $50 filing fee for I-182, plus $85 biometric services fee for those aged 14+
- Form I-765: Application for Employment Authorization
- $365 for I-765, but can be waived on your request
Requesting a fee waiver may be done either by sending a written request or filing for Form I-192. You are not required to file Employment Authorization Documentation (EAD) if you do not wish. Liberian nationals who are covered under Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) and have already applied for EAD, will not need to reapply again under the TPS.
You can find additional details about the procedures for TPS for Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone through the USCIS website.
