Legal Status Extension Allowed and Extended for Syrians

|

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, has redesignated Syria for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and extended their existing TPS status from October 1, 2016 through March 31, 2018. This is available to all current TPS beneficiaries from Syria, as well as for any Syrian nationals or for those who last habitually lived in Syria, but have resided in the U.S. since August 1, 2016 and continue to remain present in the U.S. beyond October 2016.

Important Info for Current TPS Syrian Beneficiaries

If you are a current beneficiary, you will need to re-register during a 60-day window that runs from August 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016. As a part of this 18-month TPS extension, you are eligible to apply for a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD) as well. For those who re-register during the 60-day provisional period, you will receive a new EAD that will expire on March 31, 2018.

The USCIS also understands that some re-registrants may not receive their new EAD in time before their previous work permit expires. This is why they are extending all current TPS Syrian EADs that were set to expire on September 30, 2016 for an additional six months. These EADs will now not expire until March 31, 2017.

Be sure to act quickly if you are re-registering so as not to miss this provisional window of 60-days. If you have any questions of need assistance with re-registering, call our top-rated Dallas immigration firm.
