The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has recently announced an extension of Somalia’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) registration period. People who currently benefit from Somalia’s TPS designation must reregister for the designation between now and October 26th, 2018. Approved parties will gain a TPS extension period that expires on March 17th, 2020. It is not known at this time if the USCIS will announce another possible extension as 2020 approaches.
The key information for reregistration has been collected within the official Federal Register of the USCIS. A Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status will be required for reregistration, just as it is needed for initial applications. People seeking Somalian TPS designation can also ask for copies of an employment authorization document (EAD) while reregistering for TPS designation by including a Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization at the same time. If approved, it can allow the applicant to remain in the United States and seek employment while there, up until the new expiration date of March 17th, 2020.
It is worth noting that preexisting EADs with an expiration date of September 17th, 2018 have been extended to March 16th, 2019. This automatic extension has been permitted by the USCIS to consider the time it might take for an applicant to actually receive a copy of a new EAD within the permitted TPS reregistration window.
Why is the Somalian TPS Reregistration Being Extended?
Secretary of Homeland Security Nielsen pointed to Somalia’s persistent dangers and paramilitary conflicts across the country to explain the extension of the Somalian TPS reregistration period. The country has been wracked by the Somali Civil War since January of 2009. Unrest caused by the civil war has allowed for terroristic groups to take root in the country, causing deadly attacks without warning and on an unpredictable time schedule. Nielsen reached the decision to extend the TPS designation with the assistance of several governmental entities.
