How Is Child Support Calculated in Texas?
According to Texas Family Code, Chapter 153, the Texas Attorney General has developed guidelines for determining the amount of child support. The guidelines take into account the combined net income of both parents and the number of children they have together. The guidelines also take the needs of the child into consideration such as food, clothing, and shelter. While the guidelines are a starting point, the court can deviate from the guidelines.

What Does Child Support Cover?
Child support is used to cover the basic needs of your child. This includes, but is not limited to, food, clothing, shelter, and other necessities. In addition, the court may award the non-custodial parent a portion of the cost of health insurance for the child, and the cost of the child's healthcare. Child support may also include additional expenses, such as those for the child's extracurricular activities and education.
How Long Does Child Support Last?
Generally, child support payments last until the child is 18 years old or graduates from high school, whichever occurs later. However, if the child is still enrolled in high school at age 18, then the child support will continue until the child turns 19 or graduates, whichever occurs later. In some cases, child support may be extended even further if the child is disabled and needs support beyond age 19.
